Artist Statement
What Keeps You is a solo exhibition of artwork by Katie Kehoe featuring new work that includes audio/video projection, installation, animation, and drawings.
Having been raised in the Margarees, when creating work for this exhibition, it was important for Katie that the work reflect the community and her connection to this area. Her want is for people to come to the show and see themselves reflected in the exhibition – to see themselves within the work.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a video portrait titled, A Month in the Margarees and features recordings of local peoples’ hands at work or engaged in a hobby, as well as video imagery that highlights the natural beauty of the area. Also on view is an interactive installation that engages gallery visitors to reflect on their own connection to the region.
Additionally, the exhibition features a new series of drawings and accompanying animations. Each drawing is composed of hundreds of repetitions of the word “AND” and reveals patterns from which shapes and forms emerge to compose arrangements one might liken to land formations. For Katie, “AND” is a bridge in communication and she reflects on these drawings as a form of expression that conveys the endless possibilities for interaction one can engage in, appreciating that with each interaction there is a difference in what manifests.
Katie is especially grateful to those who welcomed her to record their hands for, A Month in the Margarees; much thanks to Zachary Bennett, Liz Birch, Gerald Buckles, Joe Carew, Matthew Clements, Brian and Maria Coady-Peters, Glen Covey, Pete Covey, Chrissy Crowley, Polly Davis, Ethan Delmore, Therese Doucet, Jon Fitzpatrick, Donna Fortune, Andrew Fraser, Byron Fraser, Aurea Gillis, Cathy Hamilton, Brooks Hart, Dorothy Hart, Elmer Hart, Emilia Hart, John Hart, Wayne Ingraham, Myles Kehoe, Adele LeBlanc, Cecil LeBlanc, Denise LeBlanc, Natalie Leblanc, Pat LeBlanc, Ricky LeBlanc, Shirley Leblanc, Blair McDaniel, Jason, Sarah, Ainsley and Layla McDaniel, Derek MacDonald, Matthew MacKinnon, Nolan MacKinnon, Ryan MacPherson, Tracey Marsh, MJ Menchefski, Jack Miller, Tracey Morrison, Colton Munroe, Collette Murphy, Ann Nesbitt, Mat Noble, Mary, Hugh and Hermione Pemberton, Alexia Phillips, Elon Philips, Anne & Joel Morrell-Robinson, June Saunders, Ken Smith, Kim Tilsley, Terry Timmons, Evan Tompkins, Fay & Keith Tompkins, Julia Tompkins, Buzzy Watkins, The Dancing Goat, Larch Wood, Honey from the Heart, and others who wished to remain anonymous.
