Meditation with Helen Tworkov and Jared Bland
This class, suitable for beginners as well as more experienced meditators, will explore the ways in which meditation can help steady our minds, ground us in experience, and open our hearts. Through guided mediation and discussion, and in a welcoming and encouraging environment, participants will learn the basics of the practice, and explore techniques to use mindfulness to support their daily lives. Chairs and cushions will be available, and all classes are free.
Helen Tworkov has studied Buddhism in the Zen and Tibetan traditions. She is the founder of Tricycle: The Buddhist Review and author of the forthcoming memoir, Lotus Girl. She has been a part-time resident of Inverness for more than fifty years.
Jared Bland lives in Glencoe, Cape Breton and Toronto. He was formerly the publisher of McClelland & Stewart, and the Arts editor of The Globe and Mail. He is a student of Tibetan Buddhism and learned meditation in that tradition.
Classes will begin on June 20th at 10:30AM.
There is no fee for this workshop, it is a free class.
Tai Chi with Michelle Greenwell
Join us as we explore the healing powers of the Tai Chi Foundations and 108 Moving Meditation of Master Moy Lin Shin.
Tai Chi and Qi Gong are easy, low-impact, stretching, and strengthening ways to change the moving patterns of the body. Studies show that many of our ailments can be relieved by practising this ancient art form, these can include blood pressure, diabetes, chronic pain, headaches, joint pain, energy levels, sleep patterns, breathing patterns, allergies, inflammation, and more.
Our club offers instruction in both the standing and seated form, as well as Tai Chi (108 Moving Meditation), Sabre, and Lok Hup.
For those with movement challenges, the seated form will support your body while engaging legs, arms, and the core in strengthening and stretching opportunities. The standing form provides flexion at the hip, as well as a full extension through the legs. Both forms involve the unique spiral action and whole-body movement that is the energizing and revitalizing force for this form.
Tai Chi begins to change the structure of the body, including the support of posture as the tissue in the body, is released and balanced for optimum function. The Sabre set provides a way to open more through the hip, encourage the spiral action to expand, as well as open more through the chest and upper arms for greater lymph flow. The Lok Hup set has two parts. Part 1 supports the relationship of tension between the muscles and the tendons as experienced through emotional holding. Gentle movements encourage the body to release tension and begin to create flow throughout the body. Part 2 expands movement through all the connective tissue to massage the inner organs and open energy pathways that get blocked by sitting and sedentary actions through the hip and shoulders. Together, these movement sequences provide a full-body, energizing, and revitalizing experience. Everyone works at their own pace and ability, and together we strive to support each other as we continue to learn and grow with the Tai Chi form.
Tai Chi will be held at Inverness County Centre for the Arts every Wednesday, from 9:00AM - 11:00AM.
Registration is in a 4-month cycle (Sept-Dec, Jan-April, May-Aug), with classes running year-round. The cost is $65 per cycle.
Students may attend as many classes as they like throughout the week with their membership. (This is a not-for-profit program and your instructor is a volunteer in honour of Master Moy’s wishes that all teachings come from the heart and that Tai Chi is available to all).
